Use the Wilton or Food Network Whoopie Pie Pan to Make the PERFECT Whoopie Pie! Try the Mini Whoopie Pie Pan Too!
Move over Mr. Cupcake, the whoopie Pie is back in town! Cupcakes have become quite popular over the past few years. Sure, they have been around forever, however, television shows such as Cupcake Wars and Georgetown Cupcake have caused their popularity to skyrocket! Though I am a self proclaimed cupcake lover, I must admit I was curious when I saw that the whoopie pie was making a comeback! Please Note: Don't forget to scroll to the bottom of this hub! History of the Whoopie Pie
The origin of the whoopie pie is uncertain, however, I do know that Maine, Massachusettes (Boston, to be exact) and the state of Pennsylvania all claim to be the original birthplace of the whoopie pie. Though it is not 100% certain as to where the original whoopie pie actually came from, food historians believe that it was the Amish women of Pennsylvania that first developed this tasty treat. I guess it all depends on where you are and who you ask (and of course, who you choose to believe!). No matter where the whoopie pie was born, I do know one thing, they are delicious and you can make many different types!
The basic ingredients in whoopie pies are flour, a raising agent, salt, sugar, eggs, a milk product such as buttermilk or regular 2% milk, a fat (such as butter or shortening) and a flavoring of some sort (such as vanilla). You don’t have to buy a special whoopie pie pan to make whoopie pies, however, when I used the Wilton whoopie pie pan, the cakes came out of the oven nice and even (not to mention the pan was VERY easy to clean!). The Food Network also sells a whoopie pie pan. Both brands are available at Kohls or online at Amazon.Com. I purchased my whoopie pie pans online because I was able to get a better price (and free shipping, which is always a bonus in my book!).
I found that making whoopie pies was actually very easy ( I simply followed the directions!). The batter was interesting, not exactly as thin as cake batter and not as thick as brownie batter. The most difficult part for me wasn’t making the whoopie pies it was choosing which recipe to use! I purchased several books (all dedicated to just whoopie pies) on Amazon.Com (I am a self proclaimed cookbook junky!) and trust me when I say there are MANY different types of whoopie pies you can make! Below is a list of some of my favorites!
The Classic Whoopie: Dark devil’s food cake filled with a marshmallow crème
Carrot Cake Whoopie: Carrot cake with cream cheese filling (these were a hit at Easter!)
Peanut Butter Whoopie: Yummy peanut butter cake with a marshmallow/peanut butter filling
Vanilla Whoopie: A light, yet delicious vanilla cake with a chocolate butter cream filling
Chocolate Lovers Whoopie: Chocolate cake with a chocolate butter cream filling (kids love this one!)
Chocolate Coconut Whoopie: Classic chocolate whoopie pies with a coconut cream filling
The six types of whoopie pies listed above are all, in my opinion, delicious. However, there are MANY more types of whoopie pies you can make. It is also important to note that one of the best things about these little pies is that you can mix and match cake and filling types. Now if that isn’t fun, I don’t know what is (ok, I know, I need to get out a bit more).
So there you have it. My official opinion is that while you can make whoopie pies using a regular baking sheet, I found that using the Wilton whoopie pie pan was much easier. If you have never made whoopie pies (or if you have never eaten a whoopie pie) I suggest using a regular baking sheet first. That way you won’t waste your money if you don’t happen to like the outcome (which probably won’t be the case, but you never know).
